Moeda Caves are located in S. Mamede (Batalha), only 2 km away from Fátima. They were discovered in 1971 by two hunters who pursued a fox who took refuge in an existing ravine in the woods. Driven by curiosity, they entered in the caves and found their natural beauty.
During several months the caves were exploited by two men, allowing the discovery of several galleries. Later, a team of geologists and speleologists confirmed their scientific interest. Since then, there has been a deep concern about their preservation and surrounding area.
